Some of the Myths You May Have Heard About Braces

Having been in the industry for more than a decade, we have heard all of the myths and rumors from our patients about braces and other orthodontic treatment. In this post, Bandeen Orthodontics of Battle Creek will look at some of these myths and why they’re untrue.

Myth 1: Orthodontic treatment takes years

While the actual length of treatment time depends on the patient and how much movement is needed for their teeth, in general, orthodontic treatment at our office takes only a year to eighteen months. We are able to accomplish shorter treatment times because of our treatment philosophy (starting treatment only when it’s necessary), technological advancements, and customization of care.

Myth 2: Braces are merely cosmetic

Braces provide many benefits outside of the cosmetic improvement of patients, including improved oral health and properly aligned jaw. When your teeth are out of alignment it’s easier for food and bacteria to get stuck and a misaligned jaw can cause pain and discomfort.

Myth 3: At-home orthodontic treatment works just as well

While some people see good results from mail order treatment, it’s important to see an orthodontist as you’re going through treatment in order to properly monitor the health of your mouth and the shifting of your teeth. There is also a risk that you will do damage to your teeth that will need to be corrected by a licensed orthodontist.

Myth 4: Braces are for children and teens

Because of reduced treatment times, adult orthodontic treatment is more common than ever. In fact, at Bandeen Orthodontics, about one-third of our patients are over eighteen.

At Bandeen Orthodontics of Battle Creek, we take great pride in the improvement in quality of life we provide our patients. If you have any questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, do not hesitate to contact us!
