Case Study 63 – Root loss

Treatment was with braces in the Damon System and was finished with a retainer.  Treatment was limited to the maxillary arch only (upper teeth only).  She was experiencing a very rare condition in which one of the adult teeth was causing the loss of a neighboring permanent tooth.  The upper left permanent canine was dissolving the root of the upper left permanent lateral incisor as thought the permanent lateral incisor was a baby tooth.  We were able to move the upper left permanent canine away from the lateral incisor and were able to preserve the damaged lateral incisor.  During the treatment, we used a TAD (temporary anchorage device) to isolate the tooth movement to only involve the upper left permanent canine.  The canine had to be uncovered by an oral surgeon after which we placed the single brace and the TAD in our office.  After the canine was moved back far enough, we gave her a retainer to which she hooked up an elastic to bring the canine down vertically to match the others.  Treatment took about 4 months.
